Artificial intelligence is poised to transform the field of project management, but the indispensable role of human judgment and ethical leadership was emphasized at the 16th Annual Project Management Conference of the PMI Kerala Chapter, WAVES 2026. John Dawber, Vice President and Managing Director of Novo Nordisk Global Business Services, stated that organizations require leaders capable of inspiring diverse teams and navigating rapid technological advancements.
Dawber elaborated that AI's analytical capabilities can expedite decision-making processes. However, he stressed that accountability for final decisions will always reside with individuals, underscoring that trust, not authority, forms the foundation of effective leadership. The conference also featured Anwesha Majumdar, Regional Head of Community, PMI South Asia, who detailed PMI's updated global vision.
Majumdar's address highlighted a new strategic framework encouraging professionals to drive significant organizational and societal impact beyond conventional project delivery. She also introduced PMI's Volunteer Journey System, designed to foster structured development for volunteers, and showcased the expanding AI ecosystem, which includes AI-powered learning resources and digital platforms.
The conference culminated with the prestigious PMI Kerala Awards 2026. Notable recipients included BPCL for Project of the Year (Large), UST for Project of the Year (Medium), and H&R Block for Project of the Year (Small). Awards were also presented for sustainability, social impact, AI excellence, innovative manufacturing, and green infrastructure projects.
