Summary

- US tech firms' internal capital markets surpass national ones.

The global economic landscape is undergoing a significant reordering, marked by the increasing dominance of a few AI-enabled tech giants. Larry Fink of BlackRock notes this unprecedented concentration of wealth and power, observing how scale is now rewarded like never before.
Nine 'super-wizard' companies, including US-based Alphabet, Amazon, Apple, Microsoft, Meta, and the Tesla/SpaceX cluster, alongside Asian giants Alibaba, Huawei, and Samsung, are poised to dominate 18 fast-growing markets. In 2025, these firms collectively generated $2.7tn in revenue, exceeding Italy's GDP, and invested over $800bn in research and development.
Their internal capital markets are now immense, with US omniscalers generating $550bn in operating cash flow in 2024, surpassing US equity markets and nearing total bank lending. This internal financial power allows them to operate independently of traditional financial systems.
While governments outside China show little inclination to regulate these 'national champions,' recent legal rulings on the addictive harm caused by platforms like Google and Meta may signal a potential 'techlash.' However, the current dominance could also be exaggerated by a stock market bubble or disrupted by emerging AI technologies.
This concentration of power raises critical questions about economic inequality. As AI advances, those outside the game risk not only missing out on wealth creation but also suffering from value destruction in other sectors.
