AI Agents Threaten Retailer Margins
11 Sep
Summary
- AI agents prioritize price, not brand narrative.
- Consumer trust in AI agents drops for higher-priced items.
- BNPL integration offers merchants a competitive edge.
As Dreamforce 2026 and NRF Europe approach on September 15-17, platform providers are focusing on the agentic enterprise and merchant readiness for digital retail. However, a disconnect exists between the infrastructure being developed and the actual behavior of AI agents. Despite 42% of merchants testing agent-mediated systems and 89% preparing for them, only 3% of current transactions involve AI agents.
AI agents prioritize structured data, price, and availability over brand narrative or emotional appeal. This logic means agents may favor cheaper SKUs unless substantial data proves the value of a higher-priced item. Consumer trust in AI agents is also a concern; confidence drops significantly for retail items above £50, with only 14% of US online shoppers trusting AI recommendations without verification. A single negative experience with an AI agent can cause 81% of consumers to stop using a brand.
To maintain relevance, some merchants are adopting financial tools. Stripe's integration of Buy Now, Pay Later (BNPL) via Shared Payment Tokens allows agents to use preferred payment methods without exposing sensitive card details. Merchants using these tools have reported revenue increases of up to 14%, providing a tangible advantage in an environment increasingly optimized for price comparison.
