Habitat for Humanity has acquired property in Langford, a fast-growing community outside Victoria, B.C., to construct 26 affordable housing units. This development, named the Irwin Road Build, will feature a variety of townhomes, including two-, three-, and four-bedroom layouts, with some units designed for full accessibility.
Families with household incomes ranging from approximately $60,000 to $100,000 are eligible to apply for these homes. The project is situated in a residential area close to recreational facilities and schools. Carmen Rempel, CEO of Habitat for Humanity Victoria, expressed excitement about the property's suitability for families.
Langford councillor and acting mayor Kimberley Guirey highlighted the project's role in tackling the area's affordable housing demand and the need for diverse housing options. The city confirmed that the development will be financed entirely through developer contributions as a condition of rezoning, without utilizing tax dollars.
Applications for the new homes are anticipated to open in the summer, coinciding with the commencement of construction for the initial 16 units. Habitat for Humanity's model involves building homes and offering mortgages to qualifying individuals and families for homeownership.
