Adobe Sued Over AI Name "Foundry"
13 Mar
Summary
- Foundry Visionmongers sued Adobe for trademark infringement.
- The lawsuit alleges Adobe's AI tools cause consumer confusion.
- Foundry seeks to block Adobe's use of the "Foundry" name.

The Foundry Visionmongers, a British visual-effects software company, has initiated legal proceedings against Adobe in a California federal court on March 12, 2026. The lawsuit centers on Adobe's "Firefly Foundry" suite of generative artificial intelligence tools. Foundry alleges that Adobe's AI-based content creation software infringes upon its established trademark rights to the "Foundry" name.
The company, owned by Roper Technologies, contends that Adobe's new AI software will inevitably lead to consumer confusion due to its similarity to Foundry's own offerings. Foundry, established in 1996, has a significant track record, with its software having been utilized in the creation of every film that has won an Academy Award for visual effects since 2007. Its complaint notes that its own content-creation software also incorporates AI capabilities.
Adobe announced its "Firefly Foundry" software last year, designed to generate text, video, images, and other content using AI. Foundry's lawsuit asserts that Adobe's use of the "Foundry" name in marketing similar software to comparable markets is likely to cause significant confusion. Foundry is requesting a court injunction to block Adobe's use of the name and is seeking an unspecified amount of monetary damages. The case is proceeding in the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of California.
