Aditya Birla Group Imposes Brand Royalty Fee
14 Aug
Summary
- Group companies will pay a royalty fee for brand usage.
- The fee could generate over ₹1,000 crore annually.
- This change aligns Birla with groups like Tata and Vedanta.

The Aditya Birla Group has implemented a new royalty fee for its operating companies utilizing the group's brand name. This marks a significant shift from past practices and brings the conglomerate in line with industry peers such as the Tata and Vedanta Groups.
The new policy, set to take effect from June 1, 2026, mandates that listed and unlisted group companies pay a fee equivalent to 0.25% of their standalone revenue. This royalty payment is capped at a maximum of ₹225 crore for each company and is expected to generate over ₹1,000 crore annually for the group's promoter entity, Birla Group Holdings Private Limited.
This transition from a family-driven stewardship to more structured governance was highlighted by group executives. The royalty fee is considered a legitimate payment for the tangible and intangible benefits derived from the brand, including marketing and name recognition. The Aditya Birla Group's move is seen as a smart institutionalization of brand usage fees, providing funds for brand building and enhancing transparency.
The group did not disclose this new levy to investors as it did not breach materiality thresholds requiring shareholder authorization. The royalty became public knowledge after Hindalco's US-based subsidiary, Novelis Inc., disclosed it in regulatory filings. This fee structure is comparable to that of the Tata Group, which levies a brand subscription fee on its companies.
