Abattoir Owner Fumes Over Food Regulator's Overcharging
17 Jun
Summary
- Abattoir owner claims tens of thousands overcharged by food regulator.
- High Court ruled the Food Standards Agency unlawfully overcharged businesses.
- Financial pressures threaten remaining small abattoirs in the region.

A High Court ruling has found the Food Standards Agency (FSA) unlawfully overcharged abattoirs for essential checks and services. Luke Smith, owner of Down Land Traditional Meats near Henfield, West Sussex, expressed "furious" sentiments, estimating his business was overcharged tens of thousands of pounds. The FSA stated it acted in good faith and is seeking leave to appeal.
This decision follows a significant annual increase in the FSA's charges and a legal challenge by the Association of Independent Meat Suppliers (Aims). The financial strain has already caused several small abattoirs in the South East to close. Farmers reliant on these facilities warn that further support is needed to prevent more businesses from failing, with some stating the ruling comes too late.
Aims highlighted the "dire situation" of medium-sized slaughterhouses and called for immediate action to prevent further closures due to unlawful charges. The potential reimbursement to abattoirs could amount to millions of pounds. The FSA emphasized that food safety and animal welfare inspections, crucial for public health and the meat industry, will not be compromised.
