19 Oct
Summary
- Public sector banks hold a ₹7.8 lakh crore corporate loan pipeline.
- Companies are increasing investments, especially in renewables and semiconductors.
- Corporate credit growth varies, with some banks seeing over 50% yearly increases.
Public sector banks have reported a significant corporate loan pipeline totaling approximately ₹7.8 lakh crore, signaling a robust increase in credit demand. This heightened demand is driven by companies escalating their investment activities, with particular focus on sectors such as renewable energy and semiconductor manufacturing.
Several banks have shared their pipeline figures, with Punjab National Bank holding ₹1.58 lakh crore and Indian Bank identifying ₹63,000 crore in opportunities. State Bank of India has prospects worth up to ₹5 lakh crore, supported by investment plans in renewable energy, battery storage, and data centers.
The pickup in investment is also reflected in corporate credit growth, although the pace varies among lenders. For example, RBL Bank reported a 58% year-on-year increase in corporate loans, while Central Bank of India saw a 42.05% expansion. Mid-sized and large companies are the primary drivers of this capital expenditure, with opportunities also emerging for smaller suppliers.
Experts note that corporate capital expenditure is beginning to accelerate across various industries, including steel and cement. The renewable energy ecosystem, especially solar module and cell manufacturers, is expanding capacity. Semiconductor manufacturing is another emerging area attracting substantial new investment into India. This expansion is fueled by companies regaining investment capacity and banks holding sufficient capital for funding.
