Care Home Bond Offers 7.5% Yield: Can You Afford the Risk?
8 Jun
Summary
- New bond from care home operator Belong offers a 7.5% annual interest rate.
- This yield significantly exceeds current savings accounts and inflation.
- Experts warn that higher yields on individual bonds carry substantial risk.

A new retail bond issued by care home operator Belong presents an opportunity for investors to earn an annual interest rate of 7.5pc. This coupon payment, extending until its 2033 maturity, offers a return that substantially outperforms current savings accounts and the UK's inflation rate of 2.8pc.
Belong, specializing in dementia care, will pay investors this fixed rate twice yearly. The bond also includes a step-up clause, potentially increasing the rate to 8.5pc if the repayment is extended to 2035. Proceeds will service an existing 2018 loan and support Belong's charitable objectives.
Despite the appealing yield, financial experts highlight the inherent risks associated with individual bonds. Darius McDermott of Chelsea Financial Services expressed concern, noting that the bond's purpose of repaying a prior loan raises questions. Belong's previous bond issuances have supported its expansion, but this new offering aims to refinance remaining debt from a 2018 issuance.
The bond's listing on the London Stock Exchange subjects it to market scrutiny, which could affect its price. Investors must weigh the potential for higher returns against the increased risks involved in such investments.
