- Retirement experts warn against stopping contributions during market drops.
Personal finance expert Suze Orman identifies stopping retirement contributions during market downturns as the single biggest mistake a saver can make. Fidelity Investments' Q2 2026 analysis of 25.8 million participants showed average 401(k) balances surged to an all-time high, reaching $155,800, a significant increase from the first quarter's $141,000. This growth was attributed to workers who maintained their contributions through market volatility.
These consistent savers captured the market rebound, a gain forfeited by those who panicked and moved their money to cash. The average savings rate remained steady at 14.4%, a combination of record employee contributions and employer matches. Despite market swings throughout 2026, Fidelity observed that individuals did not pull back on their contribution amounts. Hardship withdrawals saw a slight increase to 3% of participants in the second quarter.
The profile of a 401(k) millionaire, of which there were a record 769,000, often includes an average savings rate of 17.3% (25.8% with employer contributions) and 25 years of uninterrupted contributions. Generation X comprised the largest group within this millionaire cohort. Experts stress the importance of contributing enough to secure the full employer match and using automatic escalation to reach a combined savings target of 15%.
