Wiltshire Council's strategic planning committee has approved plans for a new £30 million Moto motorway service area situated near junction 16 of the M4, close to Swindon. This decision follows a recommendation from planning officers and aims to provide essential facilities for travellers.
The new service area will feature extensive parking, with capacity for 240 cars and 63 lorries. Importantly, it will offer 50 electric vehicle charging spaces from its opening day. The project is projected to generate approximately 150 local jobs, a factor emphasized by councillors supporting the application.
Supporters highlighted the critical need for such facilities, particularly for Heavy Goods Vehicle (HGV) drivers who often face a lack of safe parking and amenities. The existing lorry park at junction 17 is frequently at capacity. While the plans were approved, they encountered significant opposition from 38 out of 42 written responses, citing concerns over increased traffic and the impact on a nearby Gypsy and Traveller site.
