Summary
- A Karnataka inspection found 25% of LPG cylinders below declared quantity.
- Fines totaling Rs 79,000 were collected from three booked cases.
- Consumers can request weighing of LPG cylinders at delivery.

An inspection of LPG bottling units across Karnataka, conducted on September 24 under 'Mission Nikhara,' has uncovered that 25% of filled cylinders contained less gas than their declared quantity. This discovery came after weighing 1,530 cylinders at 17 operational bottling units, including those of major oil companies and private entities.
While 382 cylinders were found to be underfilled, they remained within permissible error limits. However, the inspection did lead to three cases being booked, with fines amounting to Rs 79,000. The Legal Metrology Department emphasized that consumers have the right to receive the exact quantity of LPG they pay for.
Consumers are encouraged to request weighing of their LPG cylinders at the time of delivery. Government rules mandate that distributors must provide weighing instruments for this purpose. Suspected violations can be reported to the Legal Metrology Department's helpline.
