Summary
- Munich brewer Schneider Weisse to acquire Weltenburger Abbey brewery.
- The brewery boasts a nearly 1,000-year-old brewing tradition.
- The sale aims to prevent closure and preserve Bavarian heritage.

Schneider Weisse, a Munich brewing company, is poised to purchase Weltenburger Abbey's brewery, a site steeped in nearly a millennium of brewing history.
The world's oldest monastic brewery, located on the Danube in Bavaria, has been operating at a loss, necessitating the sale. The diocese of Regensburg and Schneider Weisse reached an agreement to safeguard this significant part of Bavarian brewing tradition.
This "Bavarian solution" is intended to avert a complete shutdown or breakup of the breweries by external investors, ensuring the continuation of Weltenburger's iconic brews. The acquisition, expected to finalize by January 2027, includes retaining the 21 employees of Weltenburger and 56 from Bischofshof, another brewery also being sold to Schneider.
