Tisha Campbell, who starred as Gina in the popular 1990s sitcom "Martin," has opened up about her unique relationship with the show. In a recent interview, Campbell explained that she purposefully avoided watching the series while it was still on the air, as the show's lead actor and creator, Martin Lawrence, would often surprise the cast with his extensive hair and makeup transformations into various characters.
"Martin would never let us see certain characters until we were in front of the camera," Campbell recalled, noting that she wanted to maintain the genuine reactions she had during filming. However, decades later, Campbell has become more motivated to see what all the fuss is about, as the show has continued to resonate with younger generations.
"I started watching the show because millennials and Gen Z's really enjoy the show and they often run up to me and quote s--- at me and I don't know what the f--- they're talking about," Campbell said. The sitcom, which aired from 1992 to 1997, has stood the test of time, with reruns and streaming availability keeping the show alive.
Earlier this year, BET+ announced the development of a spinoff series, "Varnell Hill," further demonstrating the enduring popularity of the original "Martin." Last year, the cast, including Campbell, Lawrence, and other core members, reunited to present an award at the 75th Emmy Awards, celebrating the show's lasting impact.
