Murderbot Renewed for Season 2 on Apple TV+, Adaptation Plans Shift

In August 2025, the Apple TV+ subscription-exclusive series Murderbot earned an early renewal for a second season. This comes as no surprise, as the show's first season, which adapted the book All Systems Red by Martha Wells, received positive reception since premiering on the 2025 TV schedule.

With six other stories in The Murderbot Diaries book series and a seventh on the way, there is ample material to keep the show running for multiple seasons. However, executive producer David S. Goyer has informed CinemaBlend that Season 2 may take a different approach with its adaptation compared to the first season.

Goyer, who was also discussing the final season of Netflix's The Sandman, shared insights on the challenges of adapting book series for television. In this age of streaming, it's difficult to gauge how long a show will last, and the producers must carefully consider the available literary material and the main cast's availability.

Rather than risk assuming Murderbot will air for a similar number of seasons as Apple TV+'s longest-running shows, Goyer and the team are leaning towards a more streamlined approach to the adaptation process. This could potentially mean a shorter overall run for the series, but it will allow them to navigate the complexities of the Murderbot Diaries' narrative structure and character arcs more effectively.
