This August, the cinematic genius of Guru Dutt will once again grace the big screens across India as part of the filmmaker's centenary celebrations. From August 8-10, 2025, a nationwide theatrical release of Dutt's 4K-restored classics will run in over 250 cinemas, offering a rare opportunity for both old and new fans to experience his haunting silences, aching glances, and heart-breaking songs in their full glory.
The retrospective, put together by NFDC-NFAI in association with Ultra media group, will showcase Dutt's most acclaimed works, including Pyaasa, Aar Paar, Chaudhvin Ka Chand, Mr & Mrs 55, and Baaz – all originally released between 1953 and 1960. Digitally remastered and presented in stunning 4K resolution, these films will allow a new generation of viewers to immerse themselves in Dutt's moody, poetic world that has defined both his storytelling and on-screen presence.
Guru Dutt's younger brother, Devi Dutt, who has worked on films like Masoom and Gandhi, sees this re-release as a bridge across generations, allowing audiences to connect with the "soul of Indian cinema" through Dutt's timeless themes of love, loss, and the human condition. With his granddaughters, Karuna and Gouri Dutt, both assistant directors, also involved in the project, this centenary celebration promises to showcase Dutt's enduring legacy and vision, which remains as sharp, poetic, and ahead of its time as ever.
