Summary

- Cata and sister Eva spend carefree summer in Mallorca before tragedy
- Grandfather Tomeu crippled with grief over wife's passing

The debut feature film Forastera, from Spanish director Lucía Aleñar Iglesias, follows the story of 16-year-old Cata and her family as they grapple with the unexpected loss of their beloved grandmother Catalina. Just last month, Cata and her sister Eva were spending a carefree summer vacation at their grandparents' house in Mallorca, enjoying the sun-soaked idyll. However, this peaceful respite is shattered when Catalina suddenly passes away, leaving the family devastated.
Cata, in her grief, finds solace by slipping into her grandmother's vintage dresses, an act that allows her to inhabit Catalina's role within the family. Meanwhile, their grandfather Tomeu is crippled with sorrow over the loss of his wife. Iglesias' film explores the ways in which the living can project their deceased loved ones onto places, objects, and other people as a means of coping with profound loss.
Forastera, which premieres at the Toronto International Film Festival on September 8th, was developed through the Cannes Film Festival's Critics' Week Next Step program for up-and-coming directors. The evocative drama promises to offer a poignant and haunting exploration of grief, memory, and the enduring bonds of family.
