Fantastic Four Debut Soars, But Faces Steep Second-Week Decline
4 Aug
Summary
- Fantastic Four: First Steps tops box office, beating Thunderbolts and new releases
- Second-weekend drop of 66%, steeper than Thunderbolts' 56% decline
- High $200M+ production budget poses profit challenges for the Marvel film

According to the latest box office data, Marvel's Fantastic Four: First Steps has maintained its position at the top of the charts, despite a sharp decline in its second weekend. The film, which marks the iconic superhero team's debut in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, had a robust $117.6 million domestic opening, surpassing the performance of previous franchise entries.
However, the momentum has not carried through, as Fantastic Four experienced a 66% drop in its second weekend, landing at $40 million. This decline is steeper than the 56% dip seen by Thunderbolts, another Marvel release, in its second week. Despite the heavier-than-expected drop, Fantastic Four continues to lead the box office, fending off two new wide releases - DreamWorks' animated sequel The Bad Guys 2 and Liam Neeson's The Naked Gun.
The high production budget of over $200 million for Fantastic Four poses a significant challenge for the film's long-term success. It needs to maintain consistent audience draw to break even, which could require a worldwide gross of nearly $500 million - a tall order even for a Marvel title. While the film's opening was stronger than recent MCU entries like Captain America: Brave New World and Thunderbolts, those had smaller budgets and still struggled to turn a profit.
The superhero crown remains with Fantastic Four for now, but its future success will depend on substantial international numbers and continued box office hold in the coming weeks.
