Enslaved Poet's Inspiring Story Brought to Life in 'The Bard'

A new historical drama, 'The Bard', is set to bring the inspiring story of enslaved poet George Moses Horton to the screen. Directed by Oscar winner Kevin Willmott, the film has now finalized its cast, which includes a talented ensemble of actors.

David Gyasi has been tapped to portray the lead role of Horton, the first Black poet to be published in America while still enslaved - a remarkable feat that was punishable by death at the time. Joining Gyasi are Julia Schlaepfer, Michael McElhatton, and David Straithairn, as well as Joseph Lee Anderson, Jay R Ferguson, Adina Porter, and Dylan Arnold.

'The Bard' will tell the true story of Horton, who used his poetry to express his love and protest against slavery. The film will also explore Horton's relationship with a white professor's wife, who assisted him in getting his work published. Willmott, who co-wrote the Oscar-winning 'BlacKkKlansman' with Spike Lee, has penned the script alongside E. Paul Edwards.

The project is being produced by a talented team, including Kim Zubick, Lauren Vilchik, Roland Waddell, Paul Edwards, and Ksana Golod. Frigate Filmworks and Chase McNaughton are on board as executive producers, with Bernice Miller serving as an associate producer.

'The Bard' promises to shed new light on the unique and powerful story of Horton, whose journey from enslavement to celebrated poet is a testament to the resilience of the human spirit and the transformative power of art.
