Emmy-Nominated Actor Reflects on Breakout Role in Acclaimed HBO Comedy

In a recent interview, actor Jeff Hiller discussed his breakout role in the acclaimed HBO comedy Somebody Somewhere. Hiller, who earned his first Emmy nomination this year for his portrayal of the character Joel, revealed that the part was not originally written specifically for him. However, Hiller's effortless embodiment of the uncomplicated, supportive friend to lead character Sam (played by Bridget Everett) has struck a chord with viewers.

Hiller, who prior to Somebody Somewhere had primarily worked in guest roles and short-term gigs, described his career before the show as "just trying to grind it out and make myself actually have a career." The easy, naturalistic rapport between Hiller's Joel and Everett's Sam was largely achieved through improvisation, with the production team often opting to leave in small, authentic details rather than re-shooting for a more polished result.

Fans of the show have expressed how much they wish they had a friend like Joel, with Hiller noting that people often have to "hold their hand over their heart" when expressing their love for the character. While Hiller acknowledges he is not as wise or selfless as Joel, he shares the character's penchant for listening, laughing, and being there for his friends.

Despite the show's critical acclaim, Somebody Somewhere was not recognized by the Emmys in its first two seasons, disappointing Hiller and the show's creators. However, this year the series earned its first nomination for Outstanding Writing, a well-deserved acknowledgment of the team's efforts.
