Chloé Zhao to Direct Hulu's Cerebral Teen-Led Buffy the Vampire Slayer Revival

Hulu is developing a new Buffy the Vampire Slayer series, and the project has secured some high-profile talent behind the scenes. Oscar-winning director Chloé Zhao (Nomadland) has been attached to direct and executive produce the potential revival, which is said to center on a new Slayer and the next chapter in the Buffyverse.

The new lead character is described as a "brainy and cerebral teen" who may be more akin to Willow than the original Buffy. Actress Ryan Kiera Armstrong (Star Wars: Skeleton Crew) has been cast in the central role. While details remain scarce, the series is expected to strike a balance between introducing new characters and bringing back familiar faces from the original Buffy the Vampire Slayer series.

In fact, Sarah Michelle Gellar, who played the iconic title character, is set to reprise her role as a recurring guest star. Gellar teased that the team will "try to find a balance between new and old characters," though her "dream is to bring back everyone who has died" while also making room for new stories.

The Buffy revival is being executive produced by Gellar, Gail Berman, Fran Kuzui, Kaz Kuzui, and Dolly Parton, all of whom were involved with the original series. Fans will have to wait for more details, but this new take on the Buffyverse promises to blend the old and the new in an exciting way.
