In a recent podcast episode, actress Gabrielle Carteris, who played Andrea Zuckerman on the hit 90s TV show Beverly Hills, 90210, opened up about the behind-the-scenes story of her character's pregnancy storyline. Carteris revealed that the pregnancy was written to coincide with her own real-life pregnancy, something she discussed with the show's producer, Aaron Spelling.
Carteris said Spelling was "so respectful" and allowed her to incorporate the pregnancy into the show, rather than hiding it. However, she believes the pregnancy storyline ultimately led to the show's writers struggling to write for her character. "They didn't know how to write for me after that, and it was just a matter of time," Carteris explained.
The actress also admitted she was "really shy" about discussing her feelings on the show with co-stars Tori Spelling and Jennie Garth at the time. Her on-screen husband, Mark Damon Espinoza, was surprised to learn Carteris had never had that conversation with her castmates. Carteris said she "felt like I didn't belong" towards the end of her time on the show.
Despite the challenges, Carteris is grateful that Spelling allowed her to incorporate her real-life pregnancy into the show's storyline. The decision sparked much debate at the time, with some critics questioning how a "smart person" like Andrea could get pregnant. But Carteris stood her ground, arguing that "intellect has nothing to do with this."
