Summary
- Sarah Michelle Gellar returns as Buffy Summers in Hulu reboot
- Oscar winner Chloé Zhao to direct pilot episode
- New slayer Ryan Kiera Armstrong cast opposite Gellar

The Buffy the Vampire Slayer reboot is officially underway, with original series star Sarah Michelle Gellar sharing a behind-the-scenes look at the project. Gellar, who led the iconic supernatural drama from 1997 to 2003, has returned to reprise her signature role as Buffy Summers.
In a recent social media update, Gellar posted photos from a table read with the rest of the cast, including a glimpse of the pilot script. While the title of the upcoming revival series is blacked out, the images suggest the reboot is well into production.
Joining Gellar in the Buffy universe is Oscar-winning director Chloé Zhao, a self-professed lifelong fan of the series. Zhao will helm the pilot episode, which was written by Nora and Lilla Zuckerman (Poker Face).
Additionally, the reboot has found its new slayer in Ryan Kiera Armstrong (Star Wars: Skeleton Crew, Firestarter), who was announced in May 2023 as the lead opposite Gellar. Armstrong's character is described as an introverted high-school student.
Gellar has teased that the reboot will have a "lighter" tone compared to the final seasons of the original series, while still aiming to balance new and old characters. The actress is "very lucky" she "didn't feel the pressure that today's actors feel" with social media during her time on Buffy, and wants to ensure the reboot includes modern themes and explores the impact of social media on outsiders.
