When Gunn was casting for "Superman," Gathegi submitted an audition tape and was later offered the part of Mister Terrific in a meeting with Gunn, producer Peter Safran, and DC Studios executive Chantal Nong. Gathegi beat out over 200 other contenders for the coveted role, which he views as a second chance to make an impact after a brief and underwhelming appearance in "X-Men: First Class."
