As the summer heat continues, movie fans have plenty of new streaming options to beat the warmth. August 2025 is shaping up to be an exciting month for film buffs, with a diverse lineup of releases across major platforms.
One of the most anticipated titles is "Final Destination: Bloodlines" on HBO Max. This sixth installment in the horror franchise is being hailed as the best since the original, with directors Zach Lipovsky and Adam Stein delivering suspenseful set pieces and an emotionally resonant storyline. The film follows a young woman fighting to protect her family from a deadly curse.
Another surprise hit is "Freaky Tales" on HBO Max, a "Pulp Fiction"-esque anthology set in 1987 Oakland. Directed by "Captain Marvel" filmmakers Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck, the movie weaves together multiple stories, including one featuring Pedro Pascal as a criminal on the run.
Netflix is also making waves with the R-rated animated comedy "Fixed," which follows a dog on a debauched odyssey on the eve of his neutering. The film, from legendary animator Genndy Tartakovsky, was nearly lost to distribution purgatory before Netflix stepped in to give it a prime summer release.
Rounding out the month's highlights is "The Thursday Murder Club" on Netflix, a cozy British murder mystery starring an all-star cast including Helen Mirren, Pierce Brosnan, and Ben Kingsley. Directed by Chris Columbus and produced by Steven Spielberg's Amblin Entertainment, the film adapts Richard Osman's bestselling novel.
