Animator and visual artist Julian Glander's one-of-a-kind animated film "Boys Go to Jupiter" is returning to Los Angeles this week, playing at the Vidiots theater. The movie, which Glander wrote, directed, and produced, follows suburban Florida youth Billy 5000 (voiced by Jack Corbett) and his quest to quickly make $5000 by becoming a courier for a food delivery app.
Glander, who had previously boasted about his ability to complete an animated feature in just a year, assembled an all-star comedy voice cast for "Boys Go to Jupiter," including Janeane Garofalo, Julio Torres, Joe Pera, Sarah Sherman, Cole Escola, Eva Victor, and Demi Adejuyigbe. The filmmaker presented the script and some visuals to the actors, who all signed on despite the unconventional nature of the project.
Glander's approach to making the movie was just as unique as the final product. Rather than following a traditional animation pipeline, he worked on every aspect of the film simultaneously, likening the process to writing a novel. The result is a visually striking world where characters are bent at unnatural angles and the overall aesthetic blends turn-of-the-millennium online art with tilt-shifted miniaturization, creating an uncanny and captivating experience.
"Boys Go to Jupiter" is now playing in theaters nationwide after premiering at film festivals earlier this year. Glander is currently writing the script for his second feature film, eager to explore a new approach that will provide a fresh creative challenge.
