Director Zoya Akhtar explained the significance of Katrina Kaif's initial on-screen kiss with Hrithik Roshan in the 2011 film 'Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara'. The kiss occurred when Katrina's character, Laila, pursued Hrithik's Arjun, who was about to depart. Akhtar clarified that the moment was not merely for romantic effect but to reveal Laila's spontaneous and impulsive side, serving a crucial narrative purpose.

Akhtar recounted her conversation with Kaif, who had never performed an on-screen kiss before agreeing because she understood the scene's narrative necessity. The director likened the moment to a fairy tale, where Laila, acting as the prince, needed to kiss Arjun, the Sleeping Beauty, to awaken him emotionally. This highlighted Laila's role in encouraging Arjun to confront his avoidance of life.

The director also discussed resisting industry pressure to include a romantic song featuring the two lead actors, despite their celebrated dancing abilities. Akhtar felt that such a song wouldn't fit the screenplay, even when suggestions like a beach fantasy or integrating them into another song were proposed. The film, released in 2011, centered on three friends traveling through Spain, with their individual journeys of self-discovery and confronting fears forming the core story. The kiss ultimately served as a character moment, pushing Arjun toward an emotional awakening.
