Snyder's Watchmen Fave: The Cut He Recommends
7 Mar
Summary
- Zack Snyder recommended a specific version of Watchmen for its anniversary.
- The Watchmen comic's 40th anniversary is in 2026.
- Other Watchmen adaptations include an HBO series and a 2024 animated film.

Zack Snyder's 2009 film adaptation of Watchmen, a cornerstone of his "Snyderverse" DC universe work, marks its 17th anniversary this year. Snyder, considering it his favorite comic book movie, has recommended a specific version for fans to watch. This recommendation reflects his tendency to release extended cuts, as seen with Batman v Superman and Justice League.
Two extended versions of Watchmen are available: the Director's Cut (186 minutes) and the Ultimate Cut (215 minutes), which incorporates the animated Tales of the Black Freighter. While the theatrical and Ultimate Cut are digitally accessible, the Director's Cut requires a physical copy. Snyder seems content with fans choosing either the Director's or Ultimate Cut for the anniversary.
Beyond the film's anniversary, 2026 will also celebrate the 40th anniversary of the Watchmen comic series' initial publication by DC Comics. This dual milestone presents an excellent opportunity to revisit other adaptations, including the HBO limited series, which served as a sequel, and the two-part animated movie released in 2024.
