These festivities, which began on February 17 and will continue for two weeks, honor the zodiac animal known for its vitality and confidence, amplified by the fire element.
Major celebrations are underway in several cities. York's community held its parade on February 14, featuring civic receptions and dragon dances. Leeds, Sheffield, and Bradford are scheduled to host parades and workshops this upcoming weekend.
In Leeds, the New Vision Education Chinese School is presenting a Qilin unicorn dance, a tradition recognized on China's national list of intangible cultural heritage since 2014. This event at the Merrion Centre and University of Leeds will include lion dances and Tai Chi demonstrations.
Sheffield's City Centre Lunar Chinese New Year Festival is taking place at the Peace Gardens. This annual event, started in 2004, features a world champion Lion Dance performance and various cultural displays. Bradford's Darley Street Market will also host performances, music, and workshops like paper cutting and calligraphy.
