Three Generations Unravel Identity in China

Yan Siyu's debut feature, "Outside the Room of My Own," is currently presenting a work-in-progress cut at the Shanghai International Film Festival.

The film centers on writer Yuan Chengge, who, experiencing burnout in Beijing, embarks on a journey with her mother and grandmother. This travel takes them from Chengdu to Luding, traversing distinct urban environments and highlighting the bonds between three generations of women.

Inspired by Virginia Woolf's "A Room of One's Own," the project revisits the concept of female independence in contemporary China. Filmmaker Yan Siyu states the film questions how to reshape subjectivity through relationships rather than achieve independence. It aims to depict the multifaceted experiences of Chinese women in a non-binary manner, juxtaposing the lives of daughter, mother, and grandmother.

Yan Siyu, who trained at the Beijing Film Academy, imbues the script with personal reflections on gender, generations, and existence within Chinese society. The narrative details everyday urban life in Beijing, including rent and neighborhood dynamics, exploring class differences through the relationship of Yuan Chengge and her boyfriend.

Actress Lucie Zhang, recognized for her role in "Paris, 13th District," stars as Yuan Chengge. Yue Hong, a Golden Rooster Award winner, portrays Yuan's mother, and Wang Caiping plays the grandmother. The creative team includes editor Kong Jinglei and cinematographer Tao Qiu.

Currently in rough cut, the film seeks international distribution and collaborators for post-production elements like sound and music. Producers express confidence in the film's emotional resonance for both Chinese and international audiences, conveying a message of hope amidst uncertainty.
