Summary
- Magneto takes on leadership of the X-Men in the new series.
- His iconic helmet is replaced by silver hair and an 'M' costume.
- The redesign mirrors his emotional and mental struggles.
The revival of "X-Men: The Animated Series" as "X-Men '97" introduces a dramatically different Magneto. Following the near-fatal incapacitation of Charles Xavier in the original series, Magneto was entrusted with leading the X-Men, a significant departure from his usual adversarial stance.
This new leadership role is visually represented by a striking makeover. Magneto has shed his iconic helmet for a mane of silver hair and sports a costume emblazoned with a large 'M'. Executive producer Brad Winderbaum explained this redesign reflects the influence of "The Trial of Magneto" comic storyline.
Winderbaum further elaborated that Magneto's new look, described as a "zaddy" with a muscle shirt and silver hair, is intended to mirror his evolving emotional and mental state. This visual cue underscores his internal struggle and shift in perspective as he navigates his complex relationship with the X-Men.
