World of Warcraft: Forever, a new remaster designed to expand upon the game's "Classic" era, is set to return players to the original Azeroth setting. This ambitious project imagines a scenario where Blizzard continued to develop the game within its initial world, rather than expanding to new continents as seen in later expansions. The game will feature over 1,000 new quests continuing unresolved story threads and introduce new explorable zones, including Mount Hyjal, along with fresh dungeons and raids.
Lead encounter designer Michael Nuthals described the development process as a challenge, requiring the team to "unlearn" design habits acquired from working on the modern version of World of Warcraft. To capture the authentic DNA of WoW Classic, developers revisited original game content weekly, ensuring new encounters felt seamlessly connected to the classic experience. Blizzard has also rebalanced classes and items, and implemented a new global illumination lighting system for enhanced atmosphere. Controversially, a new race, the Skyborne Elves, will be introduced.
The game aims to meet significant player expectations for a "Classic+" experience, a departure from the modern "retail" WoW. Blizzard conducted its largest beta to date for the game, gathering extensive player feedback. Nuthals emphasized the goal of creating an authentic and nostalgic experience, drawing inspiration from both original Classic encounters and experimental elements from the "Season of Discovery" initiative. The team is focusing on encounter design principles that reward player preparation, skill, and strategic planning.
WoW: Forever will implement "horizontal" progression, maintaining a level cap of 60 to encourage deeper engagement with game content rather than constant power escalation. This approach aims to reward players for exploring and acquiring new items, with future content designed to leverage these existing assets. Blizzard plans to introduce new dungeons and zones, including some not at the maximum level, to further expand the narrative possibilities within Azeroth. The game is slated for release on November 4.
