Champaran, historically significant as the site of Mahatma Gandhi's first satyagraha, has gained a new landmark: the world's tallest monolithic Shivling. Installed on January 17, 2026, in East Champaran, this impressive 33-foot black granite sculpture weighs 210 tonnes and is part of the Viraat Ramayan Temple complex.

The Shivling was meticulously carved from a single, massive granite block, originally weighing 354 tonnes, sourced from Mahabalipuram, Tamil Nadu. This intricate process involved 25 to 30 artisans working diligently for nearly three years.

Transported over 45 days across 2,565km, the Shivling arrived in Champaran in early January 2026. The site holds historical belief as a resting place for Lord Rama's wedding procession. Nearby Sitamarhi district is also developing a grand temple complex.
