Words of Love: A Story of Connection

Director Rudi Rosenberg's "Words of Love" explores the profound yearning for connection within a family. The narrative centers on Abigaëlle, who is driven by an obsession to find her father, a man she has never met and who abandoned her and her mother, Erika. This quest creates significant tension within the household, impacting her relationship with her mother and sibling.

Erika, a single mother raising two children from different fathers, finds herself overwhelmed by daily demands, struggling to address her children's social and academic issues. Abigaëlle's fixation on her absent father overshadows the love and support offered by her mother and brother, Yoni. A poignant scene depicts Abigaëlle's palpable longing to belong as she observes her brother's close relationship with his paternal family.

The film is distinctively set in the north Parisian enclave of Sarcelles during two periods in the 1990s. Rosenberg meticulously recreates the era with authentic production design, costumes, and a soundtrack featuring music from the time. Dialogue flows naturally, capturing the rhythms of real conversation, reminiscent of screwball comedies blended with French realism.

Despite some overly explicit plot points and occasional earnestness, particularly involving younger characters and a dog, the film succeeds through its emotional sincerity. Performances by Nour Salam as Abigaëlle and Hafsia Herzi as Erika are central to the film's impact. Salam anchors the story with a compelling portrayal of anger and hurt, while Herzi conveys deep emotion through subtle expressions and a piercing gaze. Ultimately, "Words of Love" offers a moving and engaging portrait of familial love and the search for belonging.
