The documentary "Women and War" captures the resilience of four Ukrainian women, survivors of war crimes, as they undergo trauma therapy in the Ukrainian mountains. This film, scheduled for its world premiere at the International Documentary Festival Amsterdam from November 12-22, follows the women's year-long journey toward healing.
Each woman's path to recovery is unique, marked by experiences of captivity, torture, sexual violence, and profound loss. The therapy provides a safe haven for them to confront the deep-seated effects of their trauma, gradually restoring their emotional and physical balance.
Director Elwira Niewiera emphasizes the ongoing nature of war for survivors and the deliberate use of violence against women in conflict. She aimed to create a space for these women to share their stories, highlighting their courage and steps toward healing, rather than defining them solely by their trauma.
"Women and War" was produced by Ventana Film, Telemark, and Art Dialogue, with co-production support from ZDF, TVP, and ARTE. The film promises an emotional and intimate portrayal of strength and the human capacity to endure and heal after unimaginable hardship.
