Director Adam Wingard, after helming blockbuster hits like 'Godzilla vs. Kong,' has returned to his indie roots with the genre film 'Onslaught.' The film stars Adria Arjona as Celeste, a single mother and retired Army sniper who must protect her daughter from genetically engineered super soldiers.
Wingard stated his plan was always to return to personal filmmaking, using his studio success to fund projects like 'Onslaught.' He noted that the film exists in the same universe as his 2014 cult hit, 'The Guest,' and reunites him with star Dan Stevens, though Stevens' character is not the same.
'Onslaught' explores darker historical themes, specifically 'Operation Paperclip,' where Nazi scientists were brought to the U.S. after World War II. Wingard is particularly interested in the concept of 'Nazi nepo babies,' descendants who may have continued working behind the scenes.
Arjona described her character as "vicious and strong and courageous," driven by a fierce maternal instinct. Wingard was drawn to Arjona's ability to embody the character's complexities and trauma, a departure from her previous roles.
The film aims to evoke contemporary fears, including mass shootings and unchecked militarism, with Wingard noting uncanny parallels to current events, such as the visual similarities to ICE agents he observed while editing.
'Onslaught' premieres on September 4. This new genre film promises to blend horror, action, and thriller elements, delving into historical controversies and modern anxieties.
