The Windrush Prize for British Caribbean Playwrights, a significant new award, has been established to discover and develop emerging talent. The prize honors the memory of Myron Brown, a Windrush victim, and is founded by his daughter Shereener Browne. It offers a £10,000 award to a UK-based British Caribbean playwright over 18, with the winning play guaranteed a professional production.
The winning play will be co-produced by the Arcola theatre and Orísun Productions for a minimum three-week run in 2027. Furthermore, it will be published by Methuen Drama. This initiative seeks to spotlight British Caribbean voices, which are historically underrepresented on stage and screen, and aims to ensure their impact on British culture is not forgotten.
Shereener Browne established the prize after her father's experience with the Windrush Compensation Scheme, which caused him distress before his death. The prize also includes workshops and networking events organized by Orísun Productions to support new writers. Separately, a Windrush-inspired heritage trail has been launched in London's Hammersmith to celebrate the area's African-Caribbean history.
