Art for Heat: Church Raffle for £200k Heating

St Mary's Church in Woodbridge is undertaking a significant fundraising effort to replace its broken boiler with a new low-carbon heat pump system, estimated to cost over £200,000. The church has already secured £130,000 but is actively seeking the remaining funds through various methods. This project is crucial for both maintaining the historic Grade I listed building and aligning with the Church of England's net-zero emission goals.

A unique appeal has been launched, offering a chance to win a painting titled 'Fireworks Above the Sea' by celebrated Suffolk-born artist Maggi Hambling. Tickets for this prize draw are available for £10 each, with the aim of raising an additional £10,000 towards the heating project. Father Nigel, the priest in charge, facilitated the donation from Hambling, who is known for her evocative sea paintings and sculptures.

The church hopes to have the new heating system operational by next winter, though achieving this ambitious timeline presents a considerable challenge. Beyond providing essential warmth, the low-carbon solution is expected to significantly improve the usability of the church space and help preserve its ancient fabric. This endeavor underscores the church's role as a community hub and its commitment to environmental sustainability.
