- Dafoe aims to platform unfamiliar voices and push back against theatrical sameness.

The 54th International Theater Festival in Venice, helmed by artistic director Willem Dafoe, runs from June 7-21 with the theme 'ALTER NATIVE.' This theme encourages a re-evaluation of culture and nature, aiming to present diverse global perspectives.
Dafoe expressed a desire to champion voices and cultures often overlooked, pushing back against what he described as a 'flattened' theater landscape. He emphasized a preference for the 'amateur spirit' over excessive polish, seeking raw, impactful performances.
The festival features artists from India, China, Indonesia, Rwanda, Greece, and Italy, among others. Emma Dante will receive the Golden Lion, and Mario Banushi will be honored with the Silver Lion.
Notable performances include Sharmila Biswas's 'Mischief Dance,' Bumi Purnati Indonesia's traditional dance theater, and Dorcy Rugamba's music theater tribute 'Hewa Rwanda.' Samoan director Lemi Ponifasio presents 'Star Returning,' exploring Chinese Yi people's rituals.
Davide Iodice returns with 'Promemoria,' a piece created with residents of a Venice nursing home. Dafoe will also lead a workshop, engaging with selected international applicants.
The theater department of La Biennale di Venezia was founded in 1934 and has been programmed annually since 1998.
