Laika is putting forward "The Better Part of Bravery" from its animated feature "Wildwood" for Oscar consideration in the original song category. This evocative track is performed by the popular band The Decemberists and serves as the film's closing song. "Wildwood" itself is an adaptation of the beloved debut novel by The Decemberists' own frontman, Colin Meloy, and marks the beginning of the "Wildwood Chronicles" series.
The narrative centers on Prue McKeel, a teenager who ventures into a magical forest to find her kidnapped brother. Within this world of talking animals and mystical beings, she and her classmate Curtis Mehlberg become entangled in a conflict that threatens the balance of the enchanted realm. The film's score is composed by Dario Marianelli, with Laika's executive producer David Burke highlighting the natural synergy between Marianelli's score and The Decemberists' new songs.
Directed by Travis Knight and written by Chris Butler, "Wildwood" will have its worldwide premiere at the BFI London Film Festival. The film's soundtrack, featuring "The Better Part of Bravery" and two bonus tracks by The Decemberists, is scheduled for release on Oct. 23, coinciding with the theatrical debut in the U.S., Canada, the U.K., and Ireland.
