Summary
- Wicked's horses were transformed with iridescent blue dye from Japan.
- Four different horses played Feldspar, each with unique skills.
- Hair extensions and custom oil-based makeup created a seamless look.

The "Wicked" movie's hair and makeup department achieved a magical transformation for Fiyero's horse, Feldspar, giving it a striking iridescent blue hue. This intricate process involved a specially sourced dye from Japan, known to be safe for the animals. A unique makeup base, created using horse oil and iridescent elements, was developed specifically for this purpose.
To ensure continuity and performance quality, four distinct horses were utilized to embody Feldspar. Each steed was chosen for specific attributes, such as standing still, running effectively, or posing well, with one even sharing a history with actor Jonathan Bailey from "Bridgerton." Their differing original coat colors, ranging from white to dark brown, required significant preparation, including shaving them down before the color application.
The team further enhanced the illusion by applying hair extensions to the horses' manes and tails, ensuring a perfectly unified appearance. This dedication to practical effects, a choice championed by director Jon M. Chu, echoes historical filmmaking techniques, contrasting with modern reliance on digital alternatives and contributing to an "Old Hollywood" aesthetic.
