Netflix has announced that it has officially ordered a series based on the hit 90s sitcom A Different World. The new show, which received a pilot order back in March, will star Maleah Joi Moon as Deborah, the youngest daughter of original series leads Whitley and Dwayne.
The series will pick up as Deborah begins her freshman year at the fictional Hillman College, the same HBCU her parents attended. According to the official synopsis, Deborah will find "the shadow of her parents difficult to escape" as she sets out to build her own legacy at Hillman, all while "having the time of her life" alongside a new generation of students.
Joining Moon in the cast are Alijah Kai, Chibuikem Uche, Cornell Young IV, Jordan Aaron Hall, and newcomer Kennedi Reece. It remains unclear whether Jasmine Guy and Kadeem Hardison will reprise their roles as Whitley and Dwayne.
The new A Different World series is being executive produced by Debbie Allen, who directed and produced the original show, alongside showrunner Felicia Pride. Original series writers Reggie Rock Bythewood and Gina Prince-Bythewood are also on board as executive producers.
A Different World aired on NBC from 1987 to 1993, following Lisa Bonet's Cosby Show character Denise Huxtable as she attended Hillman College. After Bonet's departure, the series shifted its focus to Dwayne and Whitley, who eventually got married and discovered they were expecting their first child in the penultimate episode.
