Luchino Visconti's acclaimed 1957 film, "White Nights," has been meticulously restored in 4K and is set to captivate audiences once more. This evocative adaptation of Fyodor Dostoevsky's novella transports the story from St. Petersburg to the romantic setting of Tuscany. The film stars a youthful Marcello Mastroianni as a lonely city transplant and Austria-born Maria Schell as a sheltered young woman.
Their chance encounter on a canal bridge blossoms into a tentative romance, fraught with longing and self-delusion, as depicted in Visconti's masterful black-and-white vision. "White Nights" garnered significant critical acclaim, winning the Silver Lion at the Venice Film Festival and recognition from Cahiers du Cinéma.
The newly restored "White Nights" will premiere its 4K version starting July 24 at Film Forum, inviting viewers to rediscover this cherished Italian classic. The film was shot at the renowned Cinecittà Studios, the same iconic location where Federico Fellini would later film his masterpieces.
