Child Stars Recall Whistle Down the Wind Magic
31 Aug
Summary
- Film location was a muddy Lancashire farm, not Hollywood.
- Young actors recalled behind-the-scenes pranks and real emotion.
- A new print and book celebrate the beloved film's legacy.

Hayley Mills and Diane Poole, who starred in "Whistle Down the Wind," recently shared fond memories of filming the 1961 classic. The production, adapted from Mary Hayley Bell's novel, shifted its setting from Sussex to a remote Lancashire farm, a location that presented a stark contrast to Mills's prior Hollywood experiences. The chilly, muddy farm environment, with its simple fare of dripping and jam butties, became the backdrop for a unique cinematic endeavor.
Under the direction of Bryan Forbes, who was new to directing, the film utilized local children for many roles, imbuing the production with authenticity. Mills, then 14, recalled the raw emotional impact of certain scenes, like one where she was genuinely struck by director Bryan Forbes. Poole, who played Nan Bostock, described her unexpected casting from a local school and how the film captured genuine childhood reactions, including her own mistakes.
Arthur Ibbetson's black and white cinematography evoked a film noir quality, complemented by Malcolm Arnold's poignant score. The film, which also featured Alan Bates, is being celebrated with a new 35mm print screening at BFI Southbank on September 4, 2026. This event will include a Q&A with Mills, Poole, and Alan Barnes, alongside the publication of a BFI Film Classic book on September 3, 2026, marking a significant retrospective for the beloved movie.
