Canadian distributor h264 has secured worldwide sales rights for Juan Andrés Arango's latest film, "Where the River Begins," just before its world premiere at the Toronto Film Festival (TIFF). The film is set to screen in TIFF's prestigious Centrepiece section.
"Where the River Begins" tells the story of Yajaira, an Embera mother living in Bogotá with her daughter. Yearning for her ancestral jungle home, tragedy forces them to flee. They undertake a dangerous journey to the Andágueda River, joined by a young gang member named Jhon.
Filmmaker Juan Andrés Arango described the film as a narrative about the universal search for belonging, seen through the eyes of an Embera mother. He expressed excitement for its international debut at TIFF, a festival celebrated for its diverse cinematic voices. Arango also noted his stimulating collaboration with h264, highlighting their creative involvement since post-production.
This Canadian-Colombian co-production, with additional collaboration from Norway, was filmed in various Colombian locations, including Bogotá and Medellín. It is produced by Annick Blanc, Maria Gracia Turgeon, and Paola Andrea Pérez Nieto.
