Wham! Broke Barriers: First Western Band in China

In April 1985, the British pop duo Wham! embarked on a pioneering journey, becoming the very first Western pop group to hold concerts in communist China. This landmark tour was orchestrated by their manager with a strategic objective: to capture global attention and significantly enhance the duo's international standing, thereby facilitating a future US stadium tour.

Met with curiosity rather than the expected fan frenzy upon arrival, George Michael and Andrew Ridgeley were initially unknown to the Chinese public. Their experience transcended mere musical performance, as they also served as inadvertent cultural envoys.
