Eligibility Rules Shake Up WGA Awards Original Screenplay Race
28 Jan
Summary
- WGA Awards nominations announced, impacting Oscar screenplay contenders.
- Seven Oscar-nominated screenplays made the cut in top film categories.
- New series 'Pluribus' leads TV nominations with four nods.

The Writers Guild of America has released its nominations for the 2026 Writers Guild Awards, offering a glimpse into the competitive landscape for screenwriters. Seven screenplays that received Academy Award nominations have been recognized by the WGA, though some were disqualified due to the guild's specific eligibility criteria.
The Best Adapted Screenplay category features a rare alignment with the Oscars, as all five Academy Award nominees are competing for the WGA award. These include 'Bugonia,' 'Frankenstein,' 'Hamnet,' 'One Battle After Another,' and 'Train Dreams.'
However, the Best Original Screenplay race saw a divergence from Oscar nominations due to WGA eligibility limitations. Only two Oscar-nominated original screenplays, 'Sinners' and 'Marty Supreme,' qualified. They were joined by 'Black Bag,' 'If I Had Legs I'd Kick You,' and 'Weapons.' Three Oscar-nominated original screenplays were ruled ineligible because their writers were not WGA members or the scripts were not penned under a collective bargaining agreement.
In television, the new series 'Pluribus' led the nominations with four nods. 'The Pitt' and 'The Studio' each received three nominations, while 'Task,' 'The Chair Company,' and 'The Rehearsal' earned two each. Final voting for the awards will take place over two weeks, commencing on Friday. The Writers Guild Awards ceremony is scheduled for Sunday, March 8, 2026, with concurrent events in Los Angeles and New York City.
