Eggers Unleashes Terrifying Werewolf Epic

Robert Eggers is poised to deliver his most terrifying film yet with 'Werwulf,' a werewolf epic he co-wrote and directed. Universal Pictures unveiled the first footage, hinting at a largely black-and-white visual style with touches of color, and described the film as his scariest creation to date. Early clips feature Aaron Taylor-Johnson and Lily Rose Depp as villagers, with a voiceover warning, "Do not dread the darkness," accompanied by violent imagery.

The cinematic experience is set for a Christmas Day 2026 release, positioning it as counter-programming. The narrative unfolds in 13th-century England, where a mysterious creature haunts the foggy countryside, transforming folklore into chilling reality. This medieval setting aligns with Eggers' preference for historical projects, as he has expressed a dislike for contemporary elements like cellphones in his films.

'Werwulf' stars Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Lily Rose Depp, and Willem Dafoe. It is produced by Eggers and co-writer Sjón, with Focus Features also involved. Chris and Eleanor Columbus, who collaborated on Eggers' previous success, 'Nosferatu,' are executive producers. 'Nosferatu' achieved significant success, grossing over $180 million worldwide and earning four Oscar nominations.
