Wayne Moss, a celebrated guitarist and producer instrumental in shaping landmark Nashville recordings, passed away on Monday at his home in Madison, Tennessee. He was 88 years old. His death was attributed to chronic obstructive pulmonary disease.
Moss was a vital part of Nashville's elite studio musicians, the "A-Team." He lent his distinctive guitar skills to unforgettable tracks, including the staccato riff on Roy Orbison's "Oh, Pretty Woman," Bob Dylan's "I Want You," and Dolly Parton's "Jolene."
Beyond his session work, Moss co-founded the experimental country-rock bands Area Code 615 and Barefoot Jerry. He also established Cinderella Sound, Nashville's oldest continuously operating independent recording studio, which hosted numerous acclaimed artists.
Born in West Virginia, Moss moved to Nashville in 1959 and quickly became a sought-after musician. He was also instrumental in developing the Nashville number system, a simplified method for musicians to transcribe music.
