Two significant works from Andy Warhol's 'Reigning Queens' series will be auctioned at Bruun Rasmussen Arts Auctioneers this month. These pieces feature portraits of Queen Elizabeth II of the United Kingdom and Queen Margrethe II of Denmark, both depicted wearing regal attire and jewelry.
The portrait of Queen Elizabeth II, created using Warhol's signature silkscreen technique and vivid Pop Art palette, is derived from a 1975 photograph. It is projected to achieve a sale price between £92,800 and £115,900. The portrait of Queen Margrethe II, based on her 1972 coronation portrait, is estimated to sell for £29,000 to £34,800.
Warhol produced the 'Reigning Queens' series in 1985, paying homage to four reigning female monarchs. The series includes editions with and without 'diamond dust' for added sparkle. Four prints of Queen Elizabeth II from the Royal Edition were acquired by the Royal Collection in 2012.
The live auction is scheduled to commence on June 17th. Art specialists highlight the series' encapsulation of Warhol's fascination with fame, hierarchy, and media imagery, noting that these works are as legendary as the monarchs they portray.
